Reading Aloud
With beginners, you can read the story aloud to the whole class while projecting the illustrations on the screen (or each student can follow the story in their own device).
The purpose of Serie Leamos is to facilitate the implementation of extensive and pleasure reading in the language curriculum by making available free reading material that is interesting and comprehensible for the learner. The nature of the topics (by students for students), the illustrations and keywords (they help in comprehension), and the extension and simplicity of the story (can be read fast) will allow a successful and enjoyable reading experience.
If your novice readers can understand the story, this challenge will translate into a sense of confidence on their language ability. Feeling good about understanding the story will make them enjoy the reading experience, and enjoying reading will lead them to want to read more. And you know, the more they read, the better language learners they will become.
Although these stories are a great source of language and vocabulary, reading a story and enjoying the experience should always be our first goal. Then and only then we may focus on language –vocabulary or structures—if desire. Please do not take away the pleasure that your students can get when reading.
The golden rule is to give students an opportunity to select the titles that interest them so that they can enjoy reading in an unthreatening and not frustrating environment. The right title is the one the reader wants to read.
If you would like to know more about why reading is important and how to use reading in your classroom, check the book information on the Extensive and Pleasure Reading page.
